The first Hispanic to become Surgeon General of the United States.

Novello was born in Fajardo Puerto Rico on August 24, 1944, and completed her early education in Puerto Rico. She graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1970 and received a PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1982. She specialized in pediatrics and children's medicine at the National Institutes of Health (1975-86) and at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (1986-89). Novello became an international leader and a respected researcher in the field of children's health and nephrology. In 1989 she was named Surgeon General of the United States by President George Bush.
