Ethel Jones Morhauser is being honored by her daughters, Margaret Morhauser Shaykewich and Mary Morhauser Fox, for her commitment to her family, students, friends, church, community, and civic activities.

Ethel J. Morhauser was born in Beacon, Iowa in 1906, the eighth of ten children. She received her education in Oskaloosa schools and William Penn College. She entered the teaching profession in a rural school in Jasper County in 1927. Her teaching career spanned over 40 years, touching the lives of hundreds of elementary and junior high students in Prairie City and the Jasper County area. Her continued interest in learning, her open-mindedness, and her willingness to accept leadership positions served as a model to us and all whose lives she touched.

Our mother exemplified the "90's" woman while parenting in the 1940's and '50's. An equal partner in her 44 year marriage, she wed John Morhauser in 1936. They made their home in Prairie City until her death in 1980. Together, our parents demonstrated to us that women are capable and valuable individuals able to succeed at any endeavor they choose.

Through her dedication to family, education, and social activism, Ethel Morhauser instilled in us a sense of responsibility to work for the causes that hold significance in our lives. Her efforts live on in the lives of many. We are richer for having known her.
