Jean Austin Peterson was born in Boscobel, Wisconsin on December 9, 1922. She graduated from the University of Minnesota where she was elected to the Honor Education and Nursing Societies. She married Dr. Elroy R. Peterson in 1944 and is the mother of five children. Active in numerous civic and human service organizations. A long time member of the League of Women Voters served as President of the Ames League; supervised development of new leagues for the state board; monitored revenue sharing in Iowa for a national project. She co-directed a state project on juvenile justice for the Iowa PTA; served on the Board of Youth and Shelter Services and was President of the Board. She coordinated the Juvenile Justice Committee and helped found the Mary Greeley Hospital Auxiliary. She instigated the first foreign exchange program at Ames High School.

She is a volunteer at the hospital and delivers Meals on Wheels and works at Red Cross blood collections. Other Boards she has served on include: Story County Mental Health, United Way, YWCA, Ames Foundation, Friends of the Octagon, Town and Gown, Ames International Orchestra, Festival Association, Friends of the Library, and Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Fellowship.
