Joan Lee Harlan was born on September 16, 1928, in Marshall town, Iowa, where she was raised. Her parents were Harry and Edna Harlan. She has one sister, Kathryn Harlan Rickert. Joan did not marry or have children, but she is especially close to her three nieces and one nephew and their children. In turn, all of them adore her.

Joan received her education in Marshalltown and graduated from high school in 1946. She went into nurses' training at St. Luke's hospital in Chicago, Illinois. After receiving her R.N. degree in 1949, she worked both at hospital nursing and at nursing in a doctor's office until 1956. At that time she became employed at the Illinois State School and Hospital for crippled children in Chicago where she stayed for twelve years. This school was for children too neurologically or orthopedically handicapped to attend school in their home communities. She found this work the most rewarding of all her career.

In 1969, Joan returned to Iowa to live in Cedar Rapids. She continued to work in pediatric nursing until she retired in 1985. Since that time she has devoted most of her energies to her extended family and to fitness. She is now an avid walker and connoisseur of healthful foods.

For all the love and care that Joan has given her patients, her family, and her friends, she most certainly deserves to be included in the Plaza of Heroines.
