Judy Mathre graduated with a B. S. degree in Botany in 1959. She then continued her graduate studies in Plant Pathology receiving her M. S. degree in 1961. She spent many hours in the rotunda of Botany Hall doing her research for her graduate degree. After leaving Iowa State University she worked as a laboratory technician for the University of California-Davis. Perhaps her major significant achievement involved her civic activates in Bozeman, Montana where she was elected to the City Commission and eventually became the first woman to serve as Mayor of the City of Bozeman.

She later worked as a Research Associate for the Local Government Center at Montana State University. Judy is being honored by her husband Don Mathre who also was a Botany major and met Judy while a student at Iowa State.
