Kay Kretschmar Runge was born December 9, 1946, the eldest child of Ina and Alfred. A college degree was her aim from the first birthday dollar she received and it was put in a savings account. She was an outstanding 4-H girl, receiving the Iowa Home Furnishing Trip to Chicago in 1965 and Leadership Training Award. In 1969, she received her B.S. degree from Iowa State University, majoring in History and Education. In 1970 she received her M.A. in Library Science from the University of Iowa. She has been the Director of the Davenport Public Library since 1985. She serves on the Board of Governors of Iowa State University Foundation and has received the Iowa State Service Key Award and Iowa State 4-H Alumni Award. Kay is a member of Alpha Delta Sorority and served on the Stars Over Veishea Central Committee in 1968 & 1969. She married Peter S. Runge, also an Iowa State University graduate, on August 17, 1968. They have two children, Peter Stephens, Jr., born September 9, 1978 and Katherine Anna, born August 11, 1981.
