I am honoring my daughter, Melanie Marie Steensland, by including her name in the "Plaza of Heroines" at Iowa State University because of my love and admiration for her; and I feel through her chosen field in Telecommunicative Arts she has far surpassed the goals she had determined for herself.

Melanie, born May 29, 1954, the daughter of Everettt and Avis Steensland, grew up on the family farm just north of Huxley, Story County, Iowa. She, her brother Greg, and sister Debbie, attended and graduated from Ballard Community School, Huxley, Iowa. Melanie was active in sports music and 4-H. While attending Iowa State University she belonged to Pi Beta Phi Sorority 208 Ash Ave. Ames. Upon graduation from Iowa State University, in 1976 she moved to Los Angeles, Calif. For the past eighteen years she has been with KCAL-TV, owned by Walt Disney Co. She is presently Director of Production, and also does special projects involving producing and directing several shows each year.

Each time I have visited her, her work associates have told me they find her to be a warm, compassionate person. As for me she is a loving daughter, and my best friend.
