VERA A. (DELAHOYDE) MARTIN was born in Guthrie Center, Iowa on November 17, 1917; orphaned when very young she and her siblings were raised at the Oddfellows Home in Mason City. Realizing the importance of education on her own she pursued her goal and graduated from what is now New Mexico State University in 1935, despite personal circumstances and the Great Depression.

After a brief marriage in California she and her son returned to Iowa where she taught school first in rural Guthrie County and later for 33 years (1943-1976) in the City of Boone. She became an institution in Boone and her advice and council continued to be sought by the generations of students she taught. Even after retiring she continued as a substitute for 5 years. Because of the importance she placed on education she also taught adult education for Boone County.

She raised her son alone was active in her Presbyterian Church and participated in Delta Kappa Gamma activities as well as those of the DAR. She retained a lifelong love of mystery novels crossword puzzles world events the Chicago Cubs and people of all ages.
