Dorothy Langdon Timmons

Mother of 8, artist, wife of 55+ years to retired ISU Distinguished Professor John F. Timmons.

Dorothy Langdon Timmons was born December 9, 1916 in southeast Missouri to Josie and Edwin Senter Langdon. She graduated from Webb School, Bell Buckle, Tennessee in 1935 and attended Sweetbriar College. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1939 with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Applied Art. She is a member of Delta Phi Delta, art honorary fraternity, and of Sigma Phi Alpha, education honorary fraternity. She is a member of Gamma Phi Beta social sorority, chapter KC of PEO, St. Cecelia's Catholic Church, Minnesota Artists, Leech Lake Arts League, Iowa Watercolor Society, Iowa Artists of which she was co-founder and first President, and the Des Moines Branch of the National League of American Pen Women.

In 1939 Dorothy married John F. Timmons, Distinguished Professor of Economics, Iowa State University. They have eight children: Dorothy J., Theresa, John L., William, Nancy, Josie, Senter and David, and thirteen grandchildren.

Dorothy has studied watercolor painting with the late Gary Sheahan, retired staff artist for the Chicago Tribune, and with Richard Heggen, Distinguished Professor of Design, Iowa State University. She has participated in watercolor workshops taught by the late Edgar A. Whitney, Frank Webb, Tony Couch Christopher Schink, Robert E. Wood, Cheng-Kee Chee, Raleigh Kinney and Morris Shubin. She has had individual gallery shows at the ISU Memorial Union, Frame Shop, and Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa and the Chase on the Lake Hotel in Walker, Minnesota. She has won numerous awards for her oil and watercolor paintings, and has been part of group exhibits for the Iowa Watercolor Society, Iowa Artists and Leech Lake Arts League. Her paintings and note cards can be seen at Evert's in Ames.
