Susan Kay Volk was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on February 4, 1945 to Edward and Edna Gleason Volk. She had two older sisters, Julia (Lebahn) and Joyce. She attended Manson Community Schools, and graduated in 1963. In 1965 she received an Associate of Arts degree from Fort Dodge College. Also in 1965 she married Ronald John Carlson on November 7. They made their home southeast of Manson and farmed with Ron's parents until 1969 when they moved to the Rockwell City area where they continue to farm. Their first daughter was born September 27, 1966.
Diane Lyn resides near Rockwell City with husband Thomas Decker and two daughters, Katelyn Ann & Megan Lyn. She is Assistant Vice President at Union State Bank. Carolyn Sue was born April 5, 1968 and passed away April 10 of the same year. Sarah Jo was born May 9, 1969. She and husband Rick Reed live on North Twin Lake with their two children, Mindy Jo and Mitchel Ron. She has an in-home day care center. Patricia Louise, born December 26, 1971, lives in Fort Dodge. She married Daniel Greene and they have two children, Bryttni Taylor & Brooke Avery. She is a beautician with a salon in her home. Joan Ellen who was born March 7, 1974 and is married to Kolby Wagner and has two children, Tyler John & Faith Ann. Joan is Deputy Assessor in Calhoun County.
In addition to farming with Ron, Sue has been a secretary at Gray & Gray Attorneys, Hunt Truckline, and Thornburg Oil. She worked in the education department at NCCF, as well as the local FSA office. She volunteered with the 4-H program for fifteen years. An active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, she volunteers her time sewing banners. She currently is sewing for profit and as a hobby. She enjoys spoiling the grandchildren, raising Golden Labradors, and riding Ski-Doo Snowmobiles in Minnesota and Wisconsin during the wintertime.
