I would like to honor my mother, Elsie Rykken Sandve, because like Carrie Chapman Catt, she is a courageous woman. She had the courage to end a marriage when it was not acceptable to do so. She had the courage to return to a nursing career after many years as a homemaker to support herself and family. She had the courage to take her family of five on trips across the country so we might learn about life outside of Ames. She had the courage to face medical challenges, including cancer, with a positive attitude. She is truly one of Iowa's heroines in my eyes.
