Margaret Morhauser Shaykewich, a 1962 graduate of Iowa State University, is being honored by her family on the occasion of her 60th birthday, September 29, 2000. She has made a difference in our lives and the lives of those she has touched.
Margaret and her husband, Carl Shaykewich, live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is the mother of two sons. John Shoesmith, an architect, and his wife Kathleen reside in Seattle, Washington. Thomas Shoesmith is a music student at the University of Manitoba. Margaret's grandson Miles Thomsen also lives in Winnipeg and benefits from his grandmother's educational abilities!
Margaret is admired by her family and friends for her courage, integrity, and her willingness to accept the most difficult tasks and see them through to completion. In her teaching career and in her own life she has championed the rights of those whose voices are seldom heard. Margaret has taught English in Iowa, Montana and Indiana, and English as a Second Language in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her students remember her for the high standards she set and her perseverance in seeing that they achieve those goals. Her attitude is contagious!
Margaret has been a willing and active volunteer in her church, school, and community. Most recently she aided in the resettlement of a family from Kosovo by using her language skills to help them adjust to life in a new country. Margaret has always believed and taught her children that it is their duty to be involved in their communities. She is living proof that involvement makes a difference in the lives of others.
