Ruth Scott Buchholtz

Ruth graduated from Iowa State College Department of Home Economics in 1932. During her college years she was active in vocal music activities under the direction of Prof. Talbert MacRae and Rosalind Cook. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi social sorority. Her honoraries included Sigma Alpha Iota music honorary; Mortar Board all-college recognition; and Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honorary.

After teaching a couple years at Kanawha, Iowa, she and Walter Buchholtz set up their home in Ames where Walter was finishing his doctoral work in Plant Pathology. All during her life she has been active in her church, Ames First Christian, where she has served in many capacities including Choir director, Memorials chairman, Sunday School teacher, Board Secretary. For the past ten years she has been an active, contented, and happy resident of Northcrest Retirement Community.

Iowa State University has been an important influence on the entire family. Her father, Atty. Ira Jay Scott, was a member of the Iowa State class of 1900. Her mother, Elizabeth Johnston Scott, attended Iowa State a couple of years with the class of 1910. Both her sisters, Helen Scott Minor (Mrs. Raymond A) and Mary Scott Edwards (Mrs. Paul E.), and their spouses were graduates of Iowa State in the 1930s. Of her four children, two graduated from Iowa State: Kathryn Buchholtz Marshall B.S. '59 (Mrs. Jerry D.) and Margaret Buchholtz Grabau B.S. ‘67 M.S.'68 (Mrs. Tom W.) with their husbands. Of her two boys, Dr William John Buchholtz D.D.S. M.D.S., attended Iowa State one year, and Dr. Thomas Walter Buchholtz M.D. worked at odd jobs on campus while he was in High School. During this time Dr. Walter Buchholtz (deceased 1967) was a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology with his offices in Old Botany, which is now being renovated and renamed Carrie Chapman Catt Hall.
