The League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County honors Nancy Halvorson in June 2021 for her years of dedication and outstanding contributions to the organization. She joined the League of Women Voters in 2010 after retiring from the Iowa Department of Transportation where she worked for 26 years. In 2013 she was elected to the board of directors of the Story County League, holding 5 different positions including Membership Committee Co-chair, Secretary, Program Committee Chair, President Elect, and Co-President from 2017-2019; some of these positions were held simultaneously. She initiated the “Issues Chat”, organized the 2018 Picnic in July, represented the League on the International Women’s Day Committee introduced the concept of “Training Wheels” in her presidential message in the 2018 Summer VOTER which encouraged members to become actively involved at whatever level is feasible with the possibility of building their involvement. Becky Coats, who was co-president with Nancy, attributed much of the success of the 2019 Iowa State Convention held in Ames to Nancy’s superior organizational skills, forming the necessary committees, suggesting an on-line catalog for the Silent Auction which helped yield over $2000, and securing Pulitzer Prize winner Andie Dominic and Editor of the Des Moines Register, Carol Hunter as guest speakers. While Co-President Nancy volunteered to represent our local League as a liaison on the State of Iowa League of Women Voters board. She is currently Vice President of the State of Iowa League, Chair of the State Fund Raising Committee, Co-Chair of the 2021 State Convention, a member of the Environmental Task Force, and Liaison on the State Board for the LWV of Ames & Story County. In March 2020, Nancy resigned from the Story County League's board of directors but remains one of the co-hosts of the “Coffee Thing” gatherings. Outside of League, Nancy has served for several years at ACCESS volunteering in an “on call” position.
