Beth Martin has taught German at Iowa State University for over 25 years. Known to her students as “Frau Martin,” Beth’s name is synonymous with excellence in teaching. She is passionate about instructing Iowa State students and transforms her classroom into a lively German setting. Beth’s approach goes beyond simply teaching grammar and vocabulary. Students do not only learn German; they live the culture, taste the food, and discuss social issues. Her classroom has a strict rule: “Wir sprechen hier nur Deutsch.” For Beth, teaching German is not only about language; it is about encouraging students to connect with others. Making mistakes is part of learning – “just make friends,” she reminds them, “communication, not perfection is the key.” Recognized for her unique teaching ability, Beth received several awards, among them the Shakeshaft Master Teacher award, the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching, the Iowa State University Excellence Award in Undergraduate Introductory Teaching, and the Iowa State Alumni Inspiration Award. Beth is a genuine role model: she shows compassion, endless kindness, and selflessness as she puts others before herself. Students describe her as enthusiastic, engaging, and inspiring, with a teaching style that makes language learning exciting and intuitive. Beth’s teaching methods focus on student motivation and engagement in language learning. She incorporates creativity and storytelling into her classes, making language learning more immersive and interactive. Students love it when she teaches alongside her trusted Mickey Mouse puppet. Her courses often involve discussion groups like “Stammtisch” and “Plauderrunde,” where students practice conversational German in a relaxed setting. Students describe her as an iconic Iowa State professor and her teaching style as enthusiastic and engaging, emphasizing participation and feedback. While she insists that her students do their “Hausaufgaben” every day, students appreciate her boundless energy, passion for learning, and commitment to helping them succeed.
