Following Korean War service, I returned to Iowa State College in 1952, eager for a degree, but impatient with the time involved. My wife, Alene, helped me stick with it. With few resources, she transformed a dingy Pammel Court quonset into an attractive, warm home and retreat. She devoted four long years to my support and encouragement-and gave birth to our daughter a year into that period. Certainly she deserves equal credit for my diploma, achievements in professional life and any credit that this reflects upon the University. In that she represents thousands of "Pammel Wives." They made notable contributions to the University, indirectly, through their personal sacrifices on behalf of their husbands. And, in my opinion, they richly deserve tribute in this company.
