Annette Whelan was my maternal grandmother. When my parents divorced when I was 7, my grandmother became a second mother. She provided for my schooling, including my years at Iowa State University. She was always there for me as my biggest cheerleader and told me that there was nothing I could not accomplish. Without words, she showered me with love. She did all this even though I was not her biological granddaughter. My grandparents adopted my mother shortly after birth. The lessons she taught me and her wisdom will remain in my heart forever.
