The children and grandchildren of Dr. Beverly Joan Dunn Nelson have chosen "The Plaza of Heroines" as a most fitting opportunity to honor our loving mother, grandmother and wonderful mentor. Having received both of her advanced degrees from Iowa State University (Master of Science in Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Education) she has utilized her education and her endless energy to provide increased opportunities for women and men across the State of Iowa.

Whether teaching country school, raising five children, providing direct nursing care, training student nurses, managing a variety of personnel administering College and District policies, lecturing to a host of audiences, serving on numerous boards, volunteering in local communities, or running for political office her primary motivation has always been to help - to help people all kinds of people realize their own potential and the incredible potential inherent in life living and learning. Without question she has established a challenging yet important path and pace for all to follow.

Further there is no better opportunity to honor our mother and grandmother, a strong woman, who has been an inspiration to so many, than to contribute to an effort associated with the University that she so loves: her appreciation of the beautiful buildings and academic classrooms where she her children and her grandchildren have learned and continue to study; her respect for her colleagues across all lines of the University; her support of ISU Football; her passion for Cyclone Basketball and "Hilton Magic;" and her special love and memories of all the ISU events and activities in which she and our father and grandfather Richard "Swede" so enthusiastically participated.

May our mother's and grandmother's place in "The Plaza of Heroines" serve as a lasting reminder of all her contributions to and love for the State of Iowa and Iowa State University. May her place also serve as a vivid reminder of the many paths she has created and the challenging pace she has set for all to follow who truly value life living and learning.

WE LOVE YOU
