Catherine Elizabeth Dodds Coats was born on October 24, 1914 on the farm near Kenton, Ohio to two teachers (George Henry Dodds and Grace Myers Dodds). She became a school teacher at the age of 17. She taught for 26 years touching the lives of thousands of young people. She was a dedicated and loving wife to William Gilbert (Gil). Coats and a loving mother to Vivian Louise Coats and Joel Robert Coats. She was a devoted and fun grandma to four grandchildren: Sarah Grace Coats, Jesse William Coats, Aaron Redmond Coats, and David Roger Coats Cooley, and to two step-grandchildren Elizabeth Ellen Butin and Annie Lynn Butin.

She had many friends and was a pillar of the community in Hepburn and Kenton, Ohio. She was respected for her wit wisdom courage and compassion. Her favorite activities included getting together with her sisters, Mary and Ruth, sewing, reading good literature, involvement in the church and enjoying music. She played countless board games and card games with her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews and she always loved a really challenging crossword puzzle.
