Her early education was in Eutawville schools. She graduated from South Carolina State and earned a Ph.D. in Educational Technology from Iowa State University in 1989. During her graduate study she worked as a graduate research assistant.

Following graduation she was employed by the United States Department of Labor in the Job Training Partnership program in Washington D.C. While in school, Dolores held positions of school leadership, and while at Iowa State she organized graduate school activities for both American and international students.

Both she and Bruce are active in the Presbyterian church as Sunday School teachers and worship leaders. They both enjoy sports, music, dance, and entertaining friends. Dolores is also active with South Carolina State Alumni Association, the Black History events for students, and the African-American Women's group in Takoma Park Maryland where they reside.
