Elaine Jacquin Notis is my loving wife and mother of Nick and Christine. We met in graduate school at Iowa State in the early 1970s and got married on June 8, 1975. She earned a Master of Science degree in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science from ISU. For the past 10 years she has used her skills as a computer programmer for Pioneer Hi-Bred International. Elaine has had a very positive calming influence on both myself and our two children (both graduates of Iowa State). She has taught all of us to exhibit more patience with people and with problem solving (not only in everyday situations but also helping Nick and Christine with difficult calculus problems). Elaine intensely desires equal rights for all people. Thus it is quite appropriate for her to be honored at Catt Hall. She also has a passionate concern for all living things and for the environment. This has led to her active role in the Central Iowa Chapter of the Orchid Society and membership in several national environmental groups.

I think of Elaine as a heroine not only because she is a wonderful mother and wife but also because she was bold enough to pursue the predominantly male field of mathematics. The fact that our children went on to study the sciences at ISU is no coincidence; Elaine is a role model in every way.
