Jean Goudy, a resident of Ames Iowa since 1969, has been active in the Democratic Party, serving as a precinct coordinator and a delegate to several county and regional conventions. In 1983 she began the first of six two-year terms as a legislative assistant to Rep. Johnie Hammond in the Iowa House of Representatives. In 1995 Goudy crossed the rotunda of the statehouse to work in the Iowa Senate when Hammond won a four-year term in that legislative body. Goudy has been the treasurer for each of Hammond's seven legislative campaigns. She played that role for the effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Story County in 1992 and for a county candidate in 1994 as well. These activist roles at the local level have been models for some of what Goudy's daughters Elizabeth (Beth) and Kathryn (Kate) have accomplished. Beth, for example, worked in local political campaigns, assisted local leaders in one of the poorest counties in the country and pursues social action through church-related projects. Kate has been a volunteer with local social action agencies, especially those dealing with children and AIDS, as she pursues a degree in social work. These activities indicate that Beth and Kate have learned from the examples set by their mother as they've participated in local programs affecting the lives of those around them.
