Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth (Sipek) Cothron was a 1978 graduate of Iowa State. Elizabeth earned her degree in Personnel Management. She excelled in numerous positions in the U.S. Navy, beginning her career with Chief of Naval Education and Training in Pensacola Florida. LCDR Cothron was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for "commendable leadership superb skill and resourcefulness" while assigned as the Officer in Charge of the Personnel Support Activity Detachment Brunswick Maine. She was assigned as the Director of the Navy Family Service Center at Naval Air Station, Oceana, Virginia, from 1990 to 1993 during the Persian Gulf war and was responsible in providing key support to deploying personnel and their families. LCDR Cothron's exceptional professionalism was recognized with the awarding of the Navy Commendation Medal in 1993. She received a second Navy Commendation Medal for exceptional professionalism in her final Navy assignment as Director Navy Public Affairs Center, Norfolk, Virginia, where she played a significant role in telling the Navy's story to millions of readers throughout the United States. Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth (Sipek) Cothron left the Navy on August 31, 1994, after sixteen years of exemplary service to her country.
