Elizabeth Williamson Melhus

Elizabeth Williamson Melhus was born on February 13, 1882, in Cable, Illinois. She died January 14, 1968. She was raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and taught school in the Des Moines public school system. She married Irving E. Melhus December 26, 1907, in Des Moines, Iowa. Irving Melhus later became head of Botany and Plant Pathology at Iowa State University. Irving and Elizabeth had two daughters, Sarah Enger Melhus Hoyman and Janet Mary Melhus Wallin. Both daughters are alumni of ISU.

Elizabeth was active in the Collegiate Presbyterian Church, Tuesday Club Botany Circle, Faculty Womens Club, and was a Charter member of Chapter HN P.E.O. Elizabeth was energetic as the wife of a department head, entertaining staff, students and research scientists from many foreign countries. She also entertained visiting dignitaries during the years Irving served as director of the ISU Tropical Research Center in Antigua, Guatemala.
