Ella Marie, or Ellie, as her friends and family knew her was born in Oxford, Nebraska, on May 21, 1919. Ellie grew up on a farm near Mascot, Nebraska during the depression. She and her sister, Beth Hindinach Bloom, grew to be very loving, caring and devoted women. Even though money was scarce, Ellie attended cosmetology school. She then owned her own salon in Orleans, Nebraska.
On July 6, 1947, she married Oscar Charles Walker. In 1950, Oscar decided to attended Iowa State College in hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Ellie worked at Anderson's Beauty Salon and the Atomic Energy Commission to help put Oscar through 7 years of school. She was extremely proud of her husband's accomplishments at Iowa State. They then moved to Zearing, Iowa in northeast Story County where Dr. 0. C. Walker went into practice. Ellie helped her husband build his practice by managing his office.
Oscar and Ellie had one child, Nancy Lynn. Through Ellie's love, encouragement and support Nancy grew up to also attend Iowa State University.
Ellie contributed to charities throughout her life and was active in many charitable organizations. She was also a 4-H leader, an active member of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, PEO, church groups, and civic organizations.
Ellie was a very strong person. When she had cancer or other health problems she never complained and was always with a smile.
Ellie was the kindest person you could ever hope to meet. She was a very considerate, loving, caring, gentle person. She was always ready to help anyone.
Ellie was the most wonderful and dedicated Iowa State wife and mother that you could ever imagine and we love her deeply for all the sacrifices and love and support she gave us.
Ella Marie Hindinach Walker is truly someone to admire.
