Mrs. Bowers was born in 1899. As a child, she survived diphtheria and small pox. She attended the University of Northern Iowa (then called Iowa State Teachers College), and taught country school. She was always interested in education and admired educational excellence. She and her husband, Carl, raised 5 daughters on a 240-acre farm in Jasper County. She taught Sunday School classes at Zoar Church near Newton, Iowa, to the primary children for 40 years. She was instrumental in keeping Zoar Church open and active. She was also involved in 4-H Ladies Aid (in the 20's and 30's), and then it was called the Women's Guild (in the 40's and 50's). She was also active in the Farm Bureau. She was a nurturant and loving mother who frequently expressed her care and concern for children. Even in the last weeks before her death at age 94, she was asking after children that she knew.
