My Aunt, Fern Hauser Ruring, was a talented progressive farm wife. She and her husband farmed all their lives keeping up with the latest information to improve their life and the farming. Fern raised Barred Plymouth Rock chickens. She developed their laying ability and beauty of the breed through the years and sold eggs and chickens to a waiting public. My brother and I, her niece and nephew, were welcomed into their home after our mother died. We were eight and nine and they became our parents as long as they lived.
She made use of the extension service and Iowa State personnel related to development of the Plymouth Rock chicken. She truly deserves to be in the Plaza of Heroines.
