Mrs. Tillett was the State president in 1934 after serving on the State Board in various capacities from 1923. She started the Mecklenburg County (Charlolte-Mecklenburg now) in 1920.

Gladys Tillett was also known nationally and internationally. She was the keynote speaker at the Democratic Party National Convention in 1944 and President Kennedy appointed her to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 1961.
