My mother, Hilda Henryson, was born October 26, 1917. She is the youngest of three children born to John and Gertie Rylander in LeGrand, Iowa. Here, she received her religious training in the Friends Church and graduated from the local consolidated school in 1935. She graduated from Iowa State College (now University) in 1940. The following year was spent teaching Vocational Home Economics in Earlham, Iowa.

On September 28, 1940, Hilda married Albert Henryson (ISU '39). They made their home on a farm north of Story City where they lived for nearly fifty years. Their daughter Anna Louise was born September 28, 1942 (ISU '64). Ann holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from The Ohio State University. Her husband Dr. Fredrick Hitzhusen (ISU '62) is on The Ohio State University faculty. They have two grown sons.

During the 1945-46 school year, when teachers were scarce, Hilda taught in the Randall Consolidated School. After that, she was a full time homemaker and mother until 1960. During this time she was active in the St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City and school activities in Randall, Iowa.

In 1960, Hilda started re-educating herself in the field of Library Science and was given the position of high school librarian in Story City. She joined the American Library Association and the Iowa Association of School Librarians in which she was very active and served one term as treasurer. Other memberships included the Story City Education Assoc., Iowa State Education Assoc., and the National Education Association. She retired in 1981.

In 1968, Hilda was elected to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and is a charter member of the Beta Gamma Chapter. She served two terms as chapter historian and one as treasurer and was active on many committees.
