As a young child she came with her family to western Iowa the year after the railroad crossed the state. She had a great love for learning and I have often been told that even as a child she always had a book in one hand. There was no high school when she finished eighth grade, so she attended a nearby normal school to have enough credits to teach rural school. She taught until her marriage to David Kennedy. Father died when my brother Colin was ten and I was six and she was left with a small farm. She was determined that we should have a good education and with her hard work and dedication we both received college degrees. The longer I live the more I appreciate what a remarkable, courageous lady she was.
