Janice J. Hawkins is a giver to family, friends and people in society throughout Iowa, the United States and Canada, and leaves her mark in many ways. Janice has been a Certified Sign Language Interpreter for the Deaf for many years. Her professional skills have been utilized extensively as an interpreter; founding committee member of AVLIC in Canada; regional board member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (U.S.A.); as well as state and local advocacy work. Janice's Iowa community participation and interests have included Pleasant Hill Friends of the Library (treasurer); Hospice of Central Iowa; Iowa State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf; National Organization of Women; Iowa Polio Survivors Group (co-chair); and much support to many, many relatives, friends and contacts. She jointly worked with many groups in developing a training video for the Des Moines Police Department for working with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

Janice also worked with several individuals on the Relay Iowa Project that accesses the deaf and hard of hearing to near-normal telephone communications. Janice is a very active individual in advocating women's and people's rights for a better life.

If I could sum up what Janice J. Hawkins gives to Iowa and beyond it would be her undying support of others; the determination to do the best job possible; and to really make a difference. She does! Thanks, Jan.
