John Klaus is the 2025 recipient of the LWV of Ames and Story County Carrie Chapman Catt Award. This prestigious award honors members who embody the spirit of Carrie Chapman Catt, founder of the LWV and a figure in securing women’s right to vote with the 19th Amendment. John has been an exemplary member of the LWV-ASC since 2009, serving in various crucial roles including Fundraising Chair, Observer Corps Chair, and Program Planning Chair. His extensive legal background, including a law degree from the University of Iowa and 34 years as Ames City Attorney (1972-2006), has been invaluable to the League. Beyond his League contributions, John has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service. He has served on the City of Ames Human Relations Commission, and held leadership positions with the Center of Creative Justice and Heartland Senior Services. John’s dedication to voter registration, voter vertices, and work on multiple League committees explicates this award’s spirit.
