Julienne Obrecht Ferry

Julienne attended Iowa State University in 1957-1961, obtaining a degree in Textiles and Clothing and Home Economics Education. While attending college, Julienne lived at Roberts Hall and Delta Zeta sorority, walking by Old Botany many times. She fondly remembers campus buildings and believes in restoring and preserving the architecture that makes the ISU campus so beautiful and unique.

She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority, Panhellenic council, Mortar Board T & C Club, campus 4-H, Iowa State Singers and Festival chorus. She used her education as a teacher at Irwin High School (3 years) and Harlan Community Schools (28 years) years. She was recognized as the outstanding teacher in Shelby County in 1963.

Julienne has been active in 4-H and Extension by being on Extension Council, 4-H leader and 4-H Judge at local county and state level. Julienne is a member of the United Methodist Church Order of Eastern Star #182 and AAUW. Being an Iowa State Alum is a source of pride. She has served on the ISU Family & Consumer Science Alumni Association Board Corporation board of Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Zeta sorority an ISU Ambassador a liaison for ISU Extension. She and her husband Richard Ferry were asked by President Jischke to be an alumni legislative contact for the university.

Julienne is the daughter of Lloyd W. Obrecht and Myrtle C. (Petersen) Obrecht of Harlan, Iowa. She is married to Richard D. Ferry and has two children: Brandt R. Ferry (ISU '89' Ag Business) and Richelle J. (Ferry) Richardson (ISU '87 Education).

Children

Richelle: Graduated from Harlan Community High School, ranked 5th in class. National 4-H Award winner in Home Environment, State 4-H award winner in Home Environment. Graduated from Iowa State University, member of Delta Zeta Sorority – President and Treasurer. Member First United Methodist Church, Harlan. Iowa State Univ. AlumAssoc. Lifetime Member. Married Todd Richardson and has two children, Matthew and Grant. Currently is AD (Activities Director) for Park Christian High School.

Brandt: Graduated from Harlan Community High School. State 4-H Award winner in Agriculture. Graduated from Iowa State University. Member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fratemity. Farm Bureau Young Farmer Achievement Award National Runner-Up, Farm Bureau Young Farmer Achievement Award State Winner. Married Stacia Schneider and has three children: Rachel (a student at ISU), Gabriel and Kristen. Currently farms a grain and livestock farm in Shelbv Countv.

Julienne was a very strong influence on her children, always encouraging them to enhance their talents and to succeed in all they do. She provided a loving home that was full of support, caring and laughter, which allowed them to grow and become nurturing and considerate adults.

Education

Graduated from Harlan High School in 1957. Music Editor of Harpoon (yearbook). Ail­ State Chorus member, member of Thespians, chorus, Glee Club, Quill and Scroll, cheerleader. Worthy Advisor - Rainbow for Girls. Selected for Grand Cross of Color.

Graduated from Iowa State University in 1961, B.S. degree in Textiles and Clothing and Home Economics Education. Member of Delta Zeta Sorority - President, Panhellenic Council. Mortar Board, T&C Club, Campus 4-H, Iowa State Singers.

Employment

Taught Home Economics (Family and Consumer Sciences) for 31 years. Taught 3 years at Irwin High School and 28 years at Harlan Community Schools. Selected as Outstanding Teacher in Shelby County- 1963. Chartered adolescent life skills class with the Lions Club of Harlan and taught the class for 12 years. Tauaht an adult class for students' parents. Taught Adult Education for 7 years.

Church Activities

Member First United Methodist Church, Harlan; member United Methodist Women (UMW), served as UMW President, UMW Recognition Pin for service, Foundation Board - 2 terms, served as chairperson and trustee, Nominations Committee member, Sunday School teacher- 13 years, Choir member- 20+ years, MYF adult sponsor, Bible School teacher, Renovation Committee- fellowship hall and kitchen, play piano or lead singing with Praise Band at our church services. Sewed seven sets of Paraments for the church. Faith Guide for confirmands.

Activities and Organizations

While teaching, Julienne belonged to American Home Economics Assoc., Patterns for Progress, Iowa Vocational Assoc., Iowa State Education Assoc., National Education Assoc.  and Harlan Education Assoc.; Iowa State University Alumni Assoc.; Lifetime Member, Iowa State University Home Economics Alumni Association - served on the board 1984-87, Iowa State University Ambassador for admissions council. 4-H State Leadership Camp, Outstanding 4-H Record Book. Winner, Shelby County 4-H Alumni Award, Shelby County 4-H Honorary Award. 4-H leader for 8 years, Shelby County Extension Council - 6 years. 4-H judge at local achievement shows, county fairs and Iowa State Fair over past 33 years. Eastern Star 50-year member, Worthy Matron 1968; Apple Pie Morning Co-chair for Shelby County Fair….30 years. Shelby County Historical Society lifetime member and currently serving as President of the Board. P.E.O., Chapter AP, several offices including the Presidency for two years. Literary Club, past president.

Julienne teaches by example to her family and others. She models a strong Christian faith and belief in others as she fills her home with traditions and love.
