Laura Matlack Wieman

Laura, the daughter of Henry and Merta Matlack, was born in Grinnell, Iowa, on July 19, 1913. She grew up in Grinnell and received her BA from Grinnell College and her MFA from Southern Illinois University (SIU). She married Henry Wieman in 1948, and they lived in various localities in the US. Laura taught in the public schools and at SIU. She was an artist and an accomplished weaver. In 1966, Laura and Henry retired to Grinnell, where they lived in the home where she had been born and raised. Laura continued to teach weaving workshops at Grinnell College. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters and held many board jobs. She was also a volunteer for the Iowa Peace Institute and a strong supporter of the United Nations. Laura was a strong, creative woman who added much to whatever community she was living in. She died in 1997.
