Born in 1947, she had a strong interest in astronomy from girlhood. After degrees from Harvard and the University of Michigan, she became the first tenured woman faculty member of Iowa State University's Department of Physics, later the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Her analysis of variable stars has challenged established paradigms and won wide-spread recognition. She has served on several national astronomy policy boards. She has taught astronomy to many students and she succeeded in bringing a planetarium and an astronomy computer lab to campus. While doing all this, she and her husband Stephen have raised two children, Kendra and Jeffrey. She has strong recreational interests in visual arts, especially ceramics and painting.
