Lois Smith Collins was born February 5, 1929 at Clark, South Dakota. She was the 4th child of five of Joseph and Marie Smith. In 1936 her parents moved to Dow City, Iowa where she attended grade and high school. She enrolled at Iowa State University in 1948 and graduated in 1951.
