Born and raised in Keota, Iowa, she was among the earliest women to graduate from ISU (1885) then Iowa Agricultural College. While in college she was active in The Literary Debate Society. She taught school for two years before marriage then lived on a farm in Muscatine County, Iowa where she raised four sons; two of whom graduated from ISU also. She is remembered as a gentle person with strong moral values. Granddaughters Muriel C. Bivens (1949) and Rita C. Dvorak (1959 or 1960) are also ISU graduates.
