Lynette Johnson was born in Ames, Iowa and attended Ames High School. She attended Iowa State University and graduated from Iowa State University receiving a B.S. degree in Biology in 1977. She received an M.S. degree in Horticulture from Iowa State University in 1981, and a M.S. degree in Statistics from Texas A and M in 1982.

She was employed by IBM as a quality control statistician from 1982 to 1993 at which time she chose to be with her family. She is married to Loras Freiburger; they have two daughters.

Lynette graduated from ISU with distinction, and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She was initiated into Sigma Xi, national science and research honorary, as one of four ISU students named as undergraduate research scholars. She was initiated into Gamma Sigma Delta, agricultural science honorary, as a graduate student at ISU.

She was a member and treasurer of her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta. She was a member of the ISU band and an ISU chorus member. She was also a member of the Student Union Board. While pursuing her M.S. degree at Iowa State, she was employed as a laboratory technician in an environmental quality laboratory. She was a teaching assistant at Texas A and M. She has published several papers related to statistics and environmental science. She was a Girl Scout troop leader while in Vestal New, York. Her personal interests are music, swimming, and nature.
