Madeline was a young widow who taught in the Centerville, Iowa, school system for thirty years, raised two sons from ages four and six, and made significant contributions to her community in her teaching career.
Through her teaching, she had an impact on the lives of many of her elementary school students, which better prepared them for later academic work and adult lives. In her retirement, she appreciated the letters and visits from former students (even those she held back because she felt they needed to be there for another year, and was able to make them see that they could be successful).
She sent both her sons through Iowa State University and continued to give them her support, caring advice, and friendship throughout their lives and careers.
