Margaret Jeffries McWilliams was born and raised in Russell, Lucas County, Iowa. She attended schools there and graduated from Russell High School in 1934. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1939 with a degree in Applied Art. She taught Home Economics for one year at Palmer Iowa High School. September 14, 1940 she was united in marriage to Richard M. McWilliams ISU 1938. They lived in Webster City, Elkader and Ames in Iowa.
They moved to Quincy, Illinois where they both retired and continue to live. They are parents of five children. Two are graduates of Iowa State - Richard H. in 1966-69 and Margaret Ann 1971. The other three are Catherine C., Park, College Parkville, MO; Paul M., Illinois State, Normal, Illinois; and James J., George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia
