I'm Marlene A. Walton. This honored acknowledgment was bestowed to me by my husband, Duane (Dewey) Walton. Duane has worked at ISU since January 1974. His father, Charles Earl Walton, also worked at ISU 15 years, passing away in 1970. We feel it’s a privilege to be able to take part in this tribute to Carrie Chapman Catt.
I was born May 22, 1957, to Ilene B. (Martini) Fandel and William E. Fandel in Algona, Iowa. I grew up in Emmetsburg, Iowa. My father died when I was just 1 ½ years old, leaving my mother to raise my three brothers Bill, Gary, Charles and myself. My mother is a wonderful parent with a warm, friendly personality and a great sense of humor.
I hope I can be as good a mother to my children. I followed in my mother's footsteps, in that I am a registered nurse. I am an oncology (cancer) nurse, at Mary Greeley Medical Center here in Ames and have found this career very fulfilling. I have had the opportunity to care for many wonderful people. Caring for people with cancer has made me aware of just how precious every day of your life can be, so live everyday to its fullest.
I want to thank my wonderful children, (step children) Jennifer and Cory and (adopted children) Amanda and Joe, for making my life more complete and thank my husband, Duane (Dewey) Allen Walton, for his honored acknowledgment.
