Dr. Ruther was a valued graduate student doing organic chemistry research at ISC with Dr. Henry Gilman in the 1940s, and following her PhD degree in 1947 (check the date-- Mary Alys Plunkett) from Iowa State College, she was appointed to the faculty of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where she was a very successful educator and author of chemistry texts. Married to Mr. James Ruther in 1962 she moved to Denville, N.J. and was a respected and honored Professor of Chemistry at The County College of Morris, Morristown, N.J. until her retirement in 1991. She remains active in affairs at The County College of Morris, and continues her service as a member of the Board of Directors of Dover General Hospital in Dover, N.J. It is a pleasure to be able to honor a graduate of Iowa State for her work there and in her professional career elsewhere.
