Mary E. (Blount) Fleig was bom March 20, 1915, and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Richard (Dick) Fleig December 13, 1945. Dick was a 1936 Iowa State graduate and a well-known Big Six diving champion in his day. Mary and Dick moved to Ames after their marriage and have remained ever since. Mary is the mother of three children, all of whom are ISU graduates: John (BS '75 MS '94), Jean (BS '72) and Barbara (BS '78). When her son John was sent to Viet Nam in 1968, Mary decided to return to work. Between 1968 and her retirement in 1985, she worked for Iowa State in secretarial positions at the ISU Extension Department, the Ames Lab, and finally in the Graduate Dean's office. We honor Mary E. Fleig in this Plaza of Heroines to express in some measure the love and gratitude we have for her as our mother. Her love and support through the years have been a source of strength for us and an inspiration for living a life of faith and compassion.

We love you, Mom, and always will.
