Mary Engstrom served as Iowa State University Student Health Center's first health educator from November 7, 1983 to June 1998. Under her guidance she organized observances of the Great American Smoke-Out, World Health Day, World AIDS Day, Alcohol Awareness Week, Condom Week and Safe Spring Break.

She supervised numerous health educator interns and was faculty advisor to the Student Health Advisory Committee for 14 ½ years. She served on the boards of the Story County AIDS Coalition and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. She served as President of the North Central College Health Association from 1994-1995 and was very active in ACHA. Mary Engstrom planted seeds of health education in the minds of countless grade school high school and college students. For this we thank you.
