Born in Kiwanee, Illinois, November 22, 1898, Mary Jane Bennison was the first of six children born to Walter Scott Bennison and Rose Walton Bennison. The family settled in Des Moines in the early 1900's, where Mary Jane graduated from West High School. She married Virgil Linderman of Des Moines in 1929. Their only child, Rose Mary Linderman, was born in 1931.

Mary Jane was an avid and accomplished needleworker and did custom sewing for Younkers Department Store. A lifelong collector of antiques, Mary Jane was a founding member of the Des Moines Antiques Club. She maintained her home on Polk Boulevard until she was 90 years of age. During her latter years, she graciously allowed the editors of Better Homes and Gardens and Victoria magazines to do photography in her home. Even after her death in July of 1990, scores of these editors and photographers affectionately remember this gracious woman as "Aunt Mary."

She was the aunt of Robert Lindemeyer, ISU alumnus and staff member since 1970. His wife, Nancy Lindemeyer, was an editor at Meredith Publishing before founding Victoria magazine in 1987.
