Mary has been my mentor since I began my career in journalism after graduation, from Iowa State and she has been a mentor to many journalists at the DeWitt Observer, where she serves as managing editor and general manager. Mary is a self-taught journalist who has won many state and national awards. Her biggest contribution, however, is to her home community where she has played a key role in many activities and organizations. She has built an outstanding reputation and career while raising a family, which has expanded to include people like myself, whom Mary considers her "other kids." She attended Iowa State University and has remained a strong supporter. She therefore deserves to have her name included in the Plaza of Heroines.
