Mary M. Shaver Walter

Mary received a B.S. degree in exercise science in 1987 and has been professionally active in the wellness/fitness field since her graduation. She first became interested in working in a hospital setting during her internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton, California. Mary is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a health/fitness instructor and has applied her expertise in this area to working with clients in private clubs in Arnold, California and Ames, Iowa.

Mary developed the Fit-4 Life wellness program for Story County Hospital and served as the director for several years before deciding to enter nursing school. In May 1995, she graduated from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing and is employed as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri.

In 1988, she married Joss Walter (B.S., 1992) who is currently the director of the Maryville, Missouri, Chamber of Commerce. She is the mother of Joslyn Marie, born December 2, 1994.

Her volunteer work includes teaching Red Cross classes in CPR and first aid. She is an avid fitness enthusiast and enjoys running and bicycling. During high school, she participated on the Ames High School gymnastics team and has taught children's gymnastics in several locations.

Mary is enthusiastic and has a gift to motivate clients to participate in exercise regimes and feel good about doing so. She is extremely outgoing and has a host of friends and acquaintances.

Mary is the daughter of Kathleen Shaver (M.S., 1974 and 1987) and the late Charles Shaver (B.S., 1953). Other family members who are ISU graduates are her sister, Sally Shaver (B.S., 1986); brother, David Shaver (B.S., 1990); cousins: Dennis Goering (B.S., 1986); Deborah Goering Sinclair (B.S., 1983); Brian Sinclair (B.S., 1984); Dwight Crevelt (B.S., 1979) and Uncle Don Goering (Ph.D., 1979).
