The woman we choose to honor is our mother - Rose Muriel Hohenshell Scholten - known by most as "Mert." She grew up in Ames, graduated from Ames High School in 1945 and from Iowa State in 1949. While on campus she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta and studied Food and Nutrition. She married John Scholten - also ISU Class of 149 - and they spent all but a few years of their life together in Ames. She always enjoyed the special opportunities afforded by life in a campus community. As children we never missed seeing the Homecoming displays, the Veishea parade ... and the cherry pies in the Home Ec building every Veishea weekend. We can only imagine how many times she passed through the area being built as the Plaza of Heroines.
Our mother always encouraged each of her children to attend college and all four of us graduated from Iowa state universities.
Our names and locations follow below:
Ann Scholten Berglund, ISU '72, Tiverton, Rhode Island
Kathy Scholten Fletcher, ISU '74, Lenexa, Kansas
Jim Scholten, U IA '76, Omaha, Nebraska
Sally Scholten Robson, ISU '77, Clive, Iowa
We're sure our collegiate accomplishments made our mother extremely proud. She dedicated so many years to us!
Sadly, mom died of cancer at the age of 63 on April 27, 1991. She and dad had been married for 42 years. We hope this brick in the Plaza of Heroines will serve as a permanent memorial of the wonderful difference she made in our lives.
