Rene is a 1983 ISU Chemical Engineering graduate. When she graduated, she ranked as first academically in the college. While a student she was active as a percussionist in marching band and as a bassoonist in concert band; she was also a carillon player and active in intramural sports. Rene was the first ISU student to participate in an exchange with the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Bradford, Bradford England; she attended one semester there. Upon graduation she worked for British Petroleum in Ohio, then for Lyondell Refinery Corporation, Houston, Texas and presently employed at Tesoro Corporation, Anacortes, Washington. She has continued her interest in music by playing bassoon in several bands and orchestras. Photography has been a hobby for her and she has won several awards for her photos. Her husband, Paul Vance is also a chemical engineer in petroleum refining. She has two sons, Zachary and Derek, and she is an active fan at all their sporting events.
