Rhonda Lynn Fulcher Coon was born and raised in Fonda, Iowa, where she attended primary and secondary school at Our Lady of Good Counsel parish. She was a state 4-H officer prior to enrolling at ISU. She graduated from ISU in 1977 having majored in Psychology and Sociology. She was active in choral groups, including the Cardinal Keynotes, and served as cantor at St. Thomas Aquinas parish while a student at Iowa State. She was an International Farm Youth Exchange participant in the Netherlands in 1977.

After graduating she served Iowa State in several capacities. She worked as a 4-H Extension agent in LeMars, Iowa, and then served as an events planner for the ISU Alumni Association. She was house mother for the Farm House fraternity. After several years in alumni she was appointed Executive Director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Since then she has served as annual fund director for Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, Membership Director for WKAR Radio and TV in East Lansing, Michigan, and in various roles in University Development and Alumni Relations at Michigan State University.

Rhonda married Tom Coon in 1988 and together they have two sons. She is a great inspiration to many through her love of singing, good humor, and dedication to her family. She maintains close contact with many of her friends from Iowa State and the Ames area. Her leadership in 4-H and in ISU Alumni functions have made her a heroine to many who care about Iowa State.
